About Cantorum
Founded in 2011, Cantorum is comprised of singers from diverse musical backgrounds. Over one-third of its members are professional music educators, soloists, and studio singers.
In addition to winning top prizes, including the Karl Jenkins Award, at the 2022 International Choral Festival Cardiff and top prizes at a 2016 Interkultur competition, including a special judges’ recognition, Cantorum has performed in the distinguished NOVA Chamber Series, collaborated with the Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble directed by composer, Howard Helvey, performed at the 2017 Western Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, presented the opening concert of the 2019 Madeleine Festival held at the historic Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Utah, has premiered several new works by composers such as S. Andrew Lloyd, Andrew Maxfield, and Jennifer Lucy Cook, performed onstage in two productions of Ballet West’s Carmina Burana, and was featured on Spotify’s “Classical New Releases” playlist performing the world premier of Jennifer Lucy Cook’s, For You I Will Be an Island. In the Spring of 2024, Cantorum traveled to Vienna, Ljubljana, Zagreb, and several cities in northern Italy to perform for the wonderful people there. Recordings can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Amazon with the latest release titled “The Best of Rooms”.
Based in Orem, Utah, USA, Cantorum’s mission is to foster a high level of artistry in the community by creating outstanding choral music experiences for its audiences and to inspire a new generation through community outreach to young musicians.
Cantorum’s Artistic Director, Steve Durtschi, is also a high school choral director and music theory teacher. A former member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Salt Lake Vocal Artists, Durtschi was also the 2016 Utah Honor Choir Men's Chorus conductor and was the 2019 recipient of the Sorenson Legacy Award for excellence in Arts Education.
Durtschi earned his Master of Music degree in choral conducting from Brigham Young University and his Bachelor of Arts in music education from Utah State University. He also studied organ at Utah State and has been active as an organist and member of the American Guild of Organists.
The group’s mission is to create outstanding chamber choral music to be shared with local and national audiences. Through performing, recording, and outreach to young musicians, Cantorum seeks to inspire a new generation and foster a high-level of artistry in our community.
The members of Cantorum are happy to call Utah and the beautiful Wasatch Mountains home.
